Answers

Company

When is your commercial release? What will be your pricing strategy?

Numenta is not offering a commercial license of our released software. When the new generation of software is available, we will make commercial licensing information available.

What are your investment opportunities?

Numenta is a private company in the development phase. It is currently funded by its founders and board members. The company is not looking for other investors at this time.

How can I stay up to date on Numenta's progress?

If you want to be updated on Numenta's progress and status, we recommend that you sign up for our newsletter and our Twitter feed. The newsletter is distributed on an occasional basis, and includes general information and updates. The Twitter feed is updated more regularly, and includes information about the release of new versions of documentation or new videos.

HTM Overview

What should I read to get prepared for working with Numenta technology?

For starters, we recommend that you read On Intelligence and our document called Hierarchical Temporal Memory including HTM Cortical Learning Algorithms.

Where can I download your product?

Numenta does not yet have a product based on the latest algorithms. Legacy software based on early prototype algorithms is available on the Legacy Software page.

Documentation

May I translate the Cortical Learning Algorithms document into another language?

We welcome individuals who would like to translate this document into other languages. For information on the licensing rights for a translation, please see here. We will post translations if provided by the translator.

Licensing

I've created my own HTM implementation using Numenta pseudocode but not using NuPIC. May I post the source code and make it freely available to others?

Yes, as long as the intended purpose is for non-commercial use. Numenta has pledged not to assert its patent rights against 3rd party software that is used for research purposes, and not for any commercial or production use. To facilitate development and distribution of such software, we have created the Numenta Non-Commercial Use license, which allows research but prohibits commercial use.

If you have used Numenta pseudocode to develop your software and you want to make your software available to others, we require you to distribute your software under the Numenta Non-Commercial license. If you have not used Numenta pseudocode to develop your software and you want to make your software available to others, we recommend that you distribute your software under this license to protect yourself and everyone who may use your software. Please see our Licensing Page for the requirements and details.

I understand that Numenta holds patent rights related to HTM and the pseudocode. Can Numenta incorporate my freely released source code into its products, or allow third parties to do so?

The Numenta Non-Commercial Use license prohibits anyone, even Numenta, from using source released under that license in commercial products.

I downloaded your platform, and it said a license key was sent to me, but one isn't in my mailbox. What do I do?

Our system tries to send out the license key within five minutes of your downloading of the platform. If you don't get your license key, try the following:

  1. Check your junkmail folder. Often, over-zealous junk mail programs may put our emails into a junk folder. Check the junk folder before moving forward.

  2. Check your profile. Go to your Numenta Profile, and check your email settings. Perhaps you've entered it incorrectly. If so, specify the correct email address, and re-download the software.

  3. Retry downloading the software. No system is completely fault tolerant. Perhaps the system didn't send out the key as requested. Download the software again and the key should be re-mailed to you.

  4. Email support. Still no luck? Send an email to key@numenta.com and request a new key. Be sure to include your username, name, and email address.

I received a license key, but what do I do with it?

The Numenta Platform requires the presence of a license file in order to execute any functionality. After you've registered on the Numenta website, and downloaded the platform, you will receive an email with your license configuration file, prefaced with your username. For example, if your username is JohnDoe, the license file you receive will be JohnDoe-license.cfg.

For Macintosh or Linux:

  • Copy the license file into $HOME/.nta, as in:
  •   cp JohnDoe-license.cfg ~/.nta/
NOTE: The name of the directory is .nta and not nta.

For Windows:

  • Save the license file anywhere on your computer. When you run the NuPIC installer you will be prompted to identify the license file.

I work for a non-profit that is affiliated with an academic institution. Which license should I use?

You should use the General Research License. The Academic Research License is applicable to those accredited educational institutions who are primarily involved in student education.
